The Pathway To Your Results
The Gratitude Shift
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We get real about gratitude as a practice that changes what we notice and therefore changes what we experience. We break down how to stay grounded in gratitude during adversity, even when grief is still in the room.
• journaling as a starter tool even when it feels like “just words”
• recognition as the first step of gratitude and the gateway to abundance
• attention as currency and why focus decides your lived reality
• gratitude as a way to change your experience without denying problems
• staying grateful with a little before you can handle a lot
• holding grief and gratitude at the same time
• how scarcity leads to comparison then entitlement
• practicing “having” before chasing the next goal
• telling people you appreciate them with specific reasons
This week, between this podcast and next week, take time to find at least three people. They can be close to you, they can be not close to you. But just take, like I just did, I just took 20 seconds to tell you how grateful for you I am and why.

Cold Open And Big Claim
SPEAKER_00Once you see what you actually are, that you're an infinite, limitless being, you'll see that nothing exists outside of you. I'm your host, Derek Grant, and this is the Pathway to Results Podcast. Bro. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Pathway to Results Podcast. It's your boy DG. We are here. Look, we're going to get this plane up in the air. We're going to get it going down the runway, get it up in the air, and we're going to get it back down. This podcast, I say this. I'm telling you it's going to be a short podcast, but I, you know, when I get going, I'm going to start ranting and talking about something, and it's going to be a little long. Yeah.
Why Gratitude Matters Now
SPEAKER_00This is the intention. I really want to make sure that this podcast helps you to really comprehend and understand the power of this thing that we call gratitude. Right. If I'm being honest with you, I was never really one who was super grateful. I'm grateful, but not like, oh, gratitude, gratitude, gratitude. But when I went through a really tough time in my life back in 2019, I had my first experience of this thing called journaling was I bought a uh thank you journal. And the thank you journal was every day. Pull it up, pull it out right here. Every day, oh, it was called a simple abundance journal of gratitude. Okay. And every day, you would just write down what you were thankful for. I can go back. This this is uh this is 2019 and 2020. I can go back and look at everything. I can look back on May uh August 26th. What is today right now? Today's date is the 11th. If we were to go back a couple years ago, on August 11th, what did I write? I said, I'm thankful for this day, this moment. I'm thankful for being able to get so much work done yesterday. I'm thankful that I have time with the kids to go on a bike ride. I'm thankful for my conversation with a person. I'm thankful for Carly's smile in her heart. Do you see the simplicity in this? And now, now these are just words. And if I'm being honest with you, every day that I was writing this, they were just words. I didn't know that I was supposed to feel the energy of gratitude, but I had to first start there. I had to first see gratitude. I had to first see the things to be grateful for. The reason why I'm saying this is because I'm telling you right now, open your eyes and not the eyes on the front of your face, the eyes that are within your heart to see that you have so much to be grateful for. And here's how we we we invoke this energy of gratitude.
Scripture As A Gratitude Lens
SPEAKER_00Okay. And I'm gonna use another scripture today. We're gonna go to church. Usher, you can go and close the doors. Thank you, please. If we look at the scripture of Matthew 13, 12. Okay, let me go ahead and pull this up real quick. I know y'all probably would think, I didn't know we were gonna go to church. We're not going to church. I'm just using this as a reference right now to get you to see how universal this is. Okay. Matthew 13, 12 says, Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Good God Almighty. Whoever does not have, even what they have, will be taken from them. No. What does that mean? What if we were to go ahead and throw the word gratitude in there? What if we were to go ahead and throw that? Whoever has more, whoever has gratitude will be given more, and they will have an abundance. And whoever does not have gratitude, even what they have will be taken from them. See, a lot of times we don't take time to be grateful for what we have because we're so focused on what we don't have yet. And the reason why you're so focused on what you don't have is because you're constantly chasing something in front of you, like a donkey chasing a carrot. And you got the carrot tied to your head, and here you are facing it, chasing the same thing, not realizing, look at where you are right now. You do realize that a point in your life you would have been chasing to be who you are today? Do you see that? Do you understand how that works? So when we start to understand the scripture, what it's saying, it says, He who has, we have to figure out what does it mean to have. See, two people can possess the same amount of money, they can have the same house, they can have the same health and experience something completely different levels of from a completely different level of abundance. See, one will look at what it does not have, and the other one will recognize what is presence. So the reason why I'm saying this when I told you to open your eyes is because gratitude will always begin with recognition. Recognition. I don't think they hear what I'm saying. Do you think I should get off right now? Yeah, probably you should D. No, I'm at, I'm fat, I'm gonna stay on here right now. See, I get to talking to myself in this. My daddy always told me, ain't nothing wrong with talking to yourself. It's just things get scary when you start answering yourself. And I'm already answering myself this early in this podcast. Recognition means to do over, to recognize, to see again, to see again. That means you already had a spirit of gratitude. You already had a spirit of gratitude. This was your part of your divine makeup. So gratitude is really, is really the auntie of abundance. It's really the grandmama of abundance. Maybe it's the twin sister of abundance, meaning I can't really be fully abundant and walk in my divine nature if I'm not walking in this energy of gratitude. Because the reality of it is, is you cannot experience what you psychologically are incapable of noticing. Do I need to say that again for the people in the back? Yeah, go ahead and say it for them. You cannot experience what you're psychologically incapable of noticing. So the first step of gratitude is recognizing and realizing what you already have. It's so easy for you to look and say, Well, I don't have this, or this situation didn't happen, or this, well, I told you that situation where I say, oh, well, I quote unquote lost that money and I had to pay this out, and I gave this to Jesus and I never got it. You know what I said to myself? There was a version of you who would have given anything to be able to have that. There would have been a version of you not too long ago that would have been, that would have been so unbelievably great, couldn't even fathom being able. And now look, you were able to give it away and not miss a beat. That, my friend, is what you should be grateful for. It wasn't about the amount, it was the capacity to be able to let it go. Do you hear what I'm saying?
Attention Shapes What You Experience
SPEAKER_00So now attention is the currency of this universe. Attention is the currency of this universe. Everything that you see in mainstream media is vying for your attention. Everything that you see is vying for your attention in mainstream media, social media, the print, uh, multimedia. Is it multimedia? I don't know. TV. Everything wants your attention. Why? Because attention was the energy, the currency of this universe. So the reason why I'm saying this is because the first step of gratitude is understanding where you are putting them ducats, where you are putting that currency at, that money. See, your brain filters out enormous amounts of information daily. And then what ends up happening is you will repeatedly focus on what becomes increasingly, increasingly uh relevant. So if you're constantly searching for what's wrong, what do you think you're gonna see? You're gonna see what's wrong. If you only look at what you don't have, then guess what you're gonna see? What you don't have. See, gratitude is us deliberately redirecting our attention towards what is working, towards what we do have, towards the present moment, towards what's meaningful, towards what we are actually thankful for having. Now, this doesn't mean that we ignore any issues that we have. And the other part of this is understanding too that gratitude doesn't change every circumstance. Okay? Not every circumstance. But here's what it does do it changes your experience of the circumstance, and that's all that mattered anyway. So I know when I go through tough things, I didn't I was doing this long. I did this back when I was just young. I didn't realize I was doing this. I always remind myself, if I made it through blank, I can make it through this. If I went through that, I know I can make it through this. That season was really dark, but oh my gosh, it's just a little bit brighter now. If there's just if it's a little bit brighter, I know I can make it through anything. That's as equally as dark as that. You see, you see now. I'm giving recognition to what we did do, to what we do have, instead of what's what's not happening. So the key here, especially when adversity comes.
Gratitude When Life Gets Hard
SPEAKER_00Gratitude's easy when you're winning. And what do you call that? Humble bragging. You see people, you get out of Lamborghini and they get that, oh my gosh, I'm so blessed. Oh my gosh, life is so good. Oh man, this is oh, that's easy to do that. Yeah, I can go on and post something with life when it's hitting. But what about when life ain't doing what it what you what you want it to do? When you say life be life, then then what? You still got gratitude then?
SPEAKER_02Hmm?
SPEAKER_00He's still saying thank you. We all been through something. You ever got through going through something? You look at God, the source, the creator of the universe, wherever you refer to it as you look at it and you start getting mad at it. You mad at it.
SPEAKER_03What the f why me? Why you doing this to me? I've been faithful, I've been done. Look, I got down on my knees, I done paid my tithes, I done done everything. Why are you doing this to me like this? I ain't do nothing. I've been a good why? Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_02Because I wanted to see if you could be grateful even in this moment. It's easy to be grateful when you have a lot.
SPEAKER_00But can you be grateful with a little? That's what I want to see. And if you can be grateful with a little, I know you can be grateful with a lot. You hear what I'm saying? Go ahead and holla if you hear me, real quick. So this is what I started to realize. The key isn't to be to have gratitude when things are going great. The key is to have gratitude when adversity hits. Can you appreciate the relationship when the teacher leaves? When you've been betrayed? Can you appreciate the relationship when they cheated on you? Or they won't they wouldn't quote unquote change? Can you appreciate uh uh uh what adversity actually taught you? Can you appreciate that? See, here's what I've come to learn. Good God Almighty, y'all stay with me. If y'all ain't staying with me, go ahead and get off right
Grief And Gratitude Together
SPEAKER_00now. I've just come to learn that grief and gratitude can exist at the same time. Y'all ain't trying to hear nothing. I've got as a matter of fact, let me get off this motherfucker. Y'all ain't trying to hear. You can be grateful and grieving at the same time. You can do both. Gratitude doesn't require you to pretend like something didn't hurt. Here's what you can say to yourself. I would not have chosen this if it was my choice. But I'm going to use what it's taught me. This isn't what I wanted. But you know what? Even this is going to help me. So gratitude allows you to not deny the storm. Because now you stop refusing that the storm exists all to begin with. There wasn't no storm. This wasn't a storm. All this was was washing off the stuff that I was scared to touch. You see what this does now? Hmm. Now we start to become a little bit more uh emotionally and spiritually and mentally resilient. Now can't nothing touch me because even when it shows its face, even when life gets hard, even when it looks like it's getting dark, I'm gonna have a smile on my face. I won't be looking at it and saying, What you looking at? And it's gonna be looking back at me and saying, Why are you smiling? I said, Because I got so much to be grateful for, I got so much to be thankful for. If you would have come back uh uh uh seven years earlier, you would have seen where I was. So you can understand why I have this smile on my face. And yes, I may have quote unquote lost this, but see, now I have the spiritual wisdom and understanding to know that this was just the precursor, and I had to extract this information so I could spur the transformation. So I'm looking at this adversity that you are staring at me with just a little bit differently because I understand good God almighty, this still is going to help me, and for this, I am grateful for it. The pain is there, and yes, it hurts, but this too I am grateful for. So I hold my arms out, eyes to the sky with tears going down my face, and I say, Thank you. Thank you, thank you. Because if it wasn't for this, it wouldn't have created me. And me is the most specialist person I've ever known. See, me is the culmination and the sum total of all of these other me's, and there's a lot of me's that you never got to meet, there's a lot of me's that you don't know, there's a lot of me's that I couldn't take out in public. I had to keep them hidden away. So I'm proud of this me. And I'm grateful for everything that led to this
Scarcity Comparison And Entitlement
SPEAKER_00me. Do you see how differently this hits now? So now when you walk around with this energy of gratitude, you don't even know what scarcity is. There is no scarcity. What the f is scarcity? Who said that? What is that? I don't even know what that is. I never even heard of it before. Because scarcity is gonna look at what I don't have, and then that leads to the next thing of comparison, and you're gonna look at and say, Well, look at what they have. And if you don't introduce gratitude before uh comparison, you're gonna move into entitlement. And here's what entitlement says look at what I should have. But gratitude. There's this soft, gentle awareness that instead says, Look at what's already here.
SPEAKER_02Look at what we have. Look at where we are, look at who we are. Look at what look at look at look at what we've overcome.
SPEAKER_01If the game stop today, I have already won. I beat the game. I beat it. I beat it.
SPEAKER_00So now life's gonna come knocking. Hey, hello. It's adversity. I'm here. Okay. Alright, here we go. I need the energy of gratitude. I need to start looking at all that I have when everything's crumbling around me. Every Thanksgiving, we go to my mother-in-law's house and she has a little box. We have to write down what we're grateful for. Right? It's fitting. Thanksgiving, right? So I write down the same thing every year. Every single year I write down the same thing. Pretty boring. Simple though. I'm just grateful for the sound mind, this self-awareness of who I am. That's it. Now I say the same thing every year. But just like a song. You can hear the same song every year, but each year it has a different meaning. And a different meaning. And the words have not changed. But isn't it funny how this year it hits differently when you hear it? Because you went through stuff. You dealt with adversity, you felt the heartache, you felt the pain, and you made it through. So when I say that I'm grateful for the sound mind, for the self-awareness, what I'm really saying is I'm grateful that I get to experience this life.
Accepting The Totality Of Life
SPEAKER_00I'm grateful that I get to experience this life. See, a lot of us sometimes we want to experience parts of life, but we don't want to experience the totality of it. That's not life. See, life is a 24-hour, seven-day week game. Life don't ever stop. So everything that comes to you is a part of life. And that too has the opportunity or gives you the opportunity to be grateful for something inside of it. And here's what I found. When you can figure out how it's helped you, you will always be grateful for it. And now our job is to figure out how has this helped me? How has this helped me? So here's what we can do.
Practice Having Before Chasing More
SPEAKER_00We can start this practice of having.
SPEAKER_01Start the practice of having.
SPEAKER_00And here's what I mean by that. Before you chase the next thing, experience this thing. Before you want that, you want that brand new car, right? You want the Benz, you with the G-Wagon, you want the Be grateful for the Honda that you have right now. You whip that motherfucker around like you were in a G-Wagon. Because there was a time where you were wondering how in the world you're gonna make these payments, and now that car is paid off. Hmm? Remember that? Okay, some of us forgot. You bought that car, you were wondering how you're gonna make payments. Now you're over here talking about 20 years later, it's old rusty thing. I can't believe it. Oh isn't that funny? Because I remember 20 years ago, you were wondering how in the world you're gonna make the end of the meat so you could go ahead and pay this thing so the repo man wouldn't come get it. And now, here you are missing the opportunity to be grateful for what you have. So I always tell people, that's why I bought the bell. I got bells around my house. Ring the bell before you set the new goal. Ring the bell before you move the goalposts. How about this? You have people in your life that you're grateful for. And you just walk around and assume that they know that you're grateful for them. Why don't you stop them? Look them dead in their eye, grab them by the hand, and tell them, hey, I really appreciate you. I'm really grateful for you. And then tell them why you're grateful for them. I told you a couple weeks ago with Carly when I told you that, you know, I stopped. We were right, we were driving. I just grabbed her hand. I said, I just want to tell you thank you. Thank you for holding me accountable. Thank you for being uh something that I couldn't be for myself. I just want to tell you I'm so unbelievably grateful and thankful for you, for you doing that. And as hard as it was for me to hear that, thank you. That's the energy of gratitude. See, I'm noticing these seemingly ordinary, mundane things, but this sharpens your vision. And vision is what's needed for you to be in the energy of gratitude. So I told you when you start to realize how things have helped you, you can start to be grateful for them.
Turning Adversity Into A Lesson
SPEAKER_00Maybe what you need to do is write down what adversity has taught you. Why don't you do that? Write down what the situation has taught you. Write down how the situation helped you. And now you've just invoked the energy of gratitude for you to say, oh my gosh, I can see how this benefited. Now here's the beauty of it: this life, this universe moves in patterns. It moves in patterns. So now I know the framework of how this works. Adversity comes, it's given me an opportunity to learn. Let's figure out what I was grateful for or what it taught me. Boom, now I can be grateful. And now your life is nothing more than the embodiment of this energy of gratitude. So, maybe before you finish this day, or maybe tomorrow morning when you wake up, if you're so lucky to get tomorrow, ask yourself, what exists in my life right now that a previous version of me once prayed for? You never take time to do that. What do I have or what am I doing in my life that at one point I would have done anything, anything to be where I'm at right now? Even stressful things. Think about the things that stress you out. That's a privilege, that's an honor that you even have the ability to be stressed out about that because somebody else would love to have the life that you have your problems with. Believe it or not. You fussing at your kids for them not eating their food. There's somebody in the world who would be grateful if their kids even had enough food not to eat. Do you see how this works? I'm not trying to make anybody here feel guilty. I'm just trying to show you that gratitude is always here. You don't have to look for far for you to be thankful for something. Because here's what I've learned gratitude, gratitude, well, gratitude, maybe that's what it is. Gratitude, right? So gratitude will turn what you possess into something that you actually experience. Gratitude is an active experience of seeing things. So there's nothing wrong with wanting more, desiring more. You can want more, but be grateful for what you do have right now. And here's the deal, you'll start to see that gratitude and abundance move in the same. They move together. It's like uh, what do they call those things? I don't know what they call. You know those sharks? You know sharks got those little fish that are on them. All right, they like they're like little, little, like uh they clean the shark and everything. It's like that. Gratitude and abundance is like a shark and the little fish. They roll together. You ain't gonna find one without the other. So I just want you to take time real quick to understand and realize.
Appreciating Small Blessings First
SPEAKER_00It's not that your prayers or your blessings haven't come to you. Maybe it's just you haven't appreciated the smallest part of them. And if you can't see the small part, you can't see the big part. So I I've I've I've I started with this journal back in 2020 of writing down what I was grateful for. And then I stopped doing it. I said, I need to start living it. So no matter what comes, I'm grateful for it. I'm thankful. The relationship may end, things may be severed, trust may be betrayed. But the first thing I do is I ask myself, how has this helped me? What is this showing me? And if you do that, you're gonna figure out a way to be grateful for it. So um I just, I just, for everybody here, it it just if this I don't know. I'm not here to, I'm not here to change the world all at one time. We can only do it one person at a time, but think about how much differently this world would feel if we were just grateful. Right? If we were grateful for what we have, there'd probably be a little less greed, maybe. And please, I want you to understand this too. Just because you have a bad chapter in life, it doesn't mean it's a bad life. Just give you a bad experience doesn't mean it's bad. I'm having deja vu right now, by the way. Not that it matters to you. Don't know why I'm having it. Just see that's my squirrel brain just went off right there on a tangent, told you irrelevant information. My point of this is this. And we go back to the scripture when I told you this. Before you ask for more, before you want more, and there's nothing wrong with wanting more. Please hear me when I say this. You're supposed to want more. There's nothing wrong with that. But before you do, please make sure that you're capable of seeing what life has already given you. Or otherwise, you'll get more and you'll never see it. And you'll get more, you'll never see it. And you'll get to the end of life and you'll be like, where was it? Man, time's flying by. You know why time's flying by? It's because you're missing now right now. So when we go back to that scripture, and hopefully it hits a little bit differently. Whoever has more gratitude will be given more. And then they'll have an abundance. And whoever does not have gratitude, even what they have will be taken from them. Even what they have will be taken from them. Not it's physically going to be taken away, the experience of it will be taken away because you never saw that you had it to begin with. You never took time to be grateful for it. So for everybody here, life is going to remove things, life is going to challenge you, life is going to demand new versions of you. Uh, occasionally it's going to even keep you from following your own plans. But your job, the goal, the intention is to continue to develop your capacity to remain rooted in who you are, even while all of this happens and be grateful for whatever may happen because it too was serving you. I know they broke your heart. I know they abandoned you. I know they rejected you. I know they traumatized you. As crazy as this may sound, that too was needed to create this beautiful version of who you are today. In this world, I'm just telling you, I'm telling you, I'm like, I only know what I know. This world will not be the same without you. It would not. This world so desperately needs you because you are a filament in the world's light bulb. And without you, this world is just a little bit more dim and a little bit more dim. But your job is to strengthen your filament. Your job is to generate this light inside
Why Your Support Matters To Me
SPEAKER_00of you. And now, when you do that, this world is so much brighter. So I just wanted to tell you, I'm grateful for you. I'm grateful for your support. I'm grateful for your time. I'm grateful that you uh you you you listened to this podcast. I'm grateful for that because at one point in time there was a version of me who didn't even believe that I was worthy enough to say anything that somebody wanted to listen to it. So I want to tell you thankful, thank you, truly. And I realize you could be listening to anything, and you probably do listen to a lot of other stuff. But the fact that you actually take time to listen to me rant and go on here every Friday, I want to tell you thank you. Because you're helping me restore a version of me who didn't think it was worthy enough of this. So isn't it so funny while you're on your little walk of life that you call your journey, how it's helping me on mine? And this podcast is me paying it back to you. And you start to see that we've always been in a relationship, we've always been working with each other, even when it's from afar. So, this is the beauty of gratitude. We start to see that this has always been here. And you and I are just an example. It does the same thing with everybody else in your life.
Challenge: Thank Three People
SPEAKER_00So, this week, between this podcast and next week, take time to find at least three people. They can be close to you, they can be not close to you. But just take, like I just did, I just took 20 seconds to tell you how grateful for you I am and why. And guess what it's going to do? It's going to make you start to see just a little bit more of yourself because in order to be grateful, in order to express your gratitude, there's a certain sense of vulnerability that you have, have to have. There's a certain sense of uh self-assurance, but it's going to make you feel so much more whole being grateful for these people or these experiences in your life. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for walking this journey with me and allowing me to enter in your life and help you and hopefully make you laugh a little bit, help you learn a little bit, make you cry a little bit. I'm grateful for all of it. Um life's gonna do what it does, and we're gonna do what we got to do, but within all that we can be grateful.
Mantra And Closing
SPEAKER_00So I want you to remind yourself of this. No matter what it may look like, no matter what it may feel like, this too is helping me. And for that, I'm grateful for it. And that's our decree, that's our mantra, that's our anthem. And as always, I wish you nothing but the best on the pathway to your results.
