We break down why two people can live in the same world and still get wildly different results, and it comes back to the thermostat setting of the mind. We show how a growth mindset changes your relationship with failure, identity, and effort so you keep moving even when it gets uncomfortable.
• defining mindset as your default mental thermostat
• separating fixed mindset from growth mindset across different areas of life
• spotting fixed mindset language like “I can’t” and “it’s hard”
• reframing self-talk with “I haven’t yet” and “I’m still figuring it out”
• using Carol S Dweck’s research to explain praise, risk, and learning
• letting kids own the journey so we don’t build dependence
• learning from Kobe’s misses and the decision to keep shooting
• measuring effort and recovery instead of only measuring results
• adopting a growth mindset by telling your nervous system you are safe
• choosing challenge over comfort to expand what you can become

Opening And Why People Stay Stuck
SPEAKER_00Once you see what you actually are, that you're an infinite, limitless being, you'll see that nothing exists outside of you. I'm your host, Derek Grant, and this is the Pathway to Your Results Podcast. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Pathway to Results Podcast. It is your boy, it is your brethren. DG. Look, we're gonna do this episode, and I'm gonna let you all inside of my mind, like I always
The Question Behind Separation
SPEAKER_00do. Okay. I started to figure, or I wanted to know, like, what separated like us from others? And this is the illusion of separation, but like what makes others stay stuck and others grow? So this is a question that I've been asking. You know, anybody know you got children, you can have two children, three children, four children, they can all be raised in the same household. And then you're like, how come that one's different from that one? And that one dealt with that situation. We can look at it from a soul level, but for right now, we're gonna stay on the surface. And I wanted to figure out why. Is it nature versus nurture? Which one is it? So here's what I found. Okay. And I started to look at my own life, my own family, my own upbringing. And then life provided the resource or the synchronicity for me to like have a light bulb moment. And it's really quite simple. We've heard this before, okay.
Mindset As Your Inner Thermostat
SPEAKER_00We can split people up into two different mindsets. And when I say mindset, let's understand what mindset is. Mindset is nothing more than the thermostat of your mind. The thermostat. You know how it is when you turn your thermostat on in your room, right? You put it on 70 degrees, it's gonna regulate and stay at 70, okay? So this is what our mindset is. This is your your natural um default state of your mind, right? We can break this down into two categories. You either have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. Now, sounds simple. Okay, sounds simple, but we have to understand the difference between the two. And look, hear me when I say this. If you have a fixed mindset or you have a growth mindset, please don't think that one is better than the other. It's not. So if I sit here and talk about fixed mindset, don't think, oh no, I have a fixed mindset. Because here's the reality of it. We all have a growth and fixed mindset in different facets of life. You may have a growth mindset when it comes to your business, but you may have a fixed mindset when it comes to your self-development. You may have a growth mindset when it comes to your body, but you may have a fixed mindset when it comes to your relationships. So the key is being able to understand the difference between the two. See,
Fixed Mindset Sounds Like Cant
SPEAKER_00people who have a fixed mindset, you know what they say? They say essentially energetically, nervous system-wise, my abilities are fixed. This is who I am. So guess what? Because you don't think that you can change, you believe that your intelligence is stuck. It can't move, you can't evolve, you can't change. You believe that your talent is something that you're born with. Even worse, we start to think that success proves our worth when we have a fixed mindset, or that failure will expose uh your lack of worth. So here's what it sounds like when we have a fixed mindset. I'm just not any good at this. I just can't do this. I was having a conversation with my uh daughter the other day. She's she's I'm not in the cheer world. I'm in it as a parent, but I'm not like a cheer dad. I'm still learning, okay? Growth mindset, excuse me. I'm still trying to figure out how it all works. And she was telling me about tumbling, and she was telling me how she's been like her routine is really hard, and she's one of the flyers that get thrown up, and they're, you know, the people throwing up are kind of struggling right now because they're new and they're trying to figure each other out. She said, I can't do it. I said, Well, hold on now. Hold on now. Let's let's go ahead and say the same thing, but you can't use the word can't. Well, it's really hard. Nope, can't say that. Can't say that it's really hard. And I realized what she was doing. She was looking at everything from a fixed mindset. See, when you have a fixed mindset, you say that you can't. When you have a fixed mindset, you say that it's hard. When you have a fixed mindset, you say that it's impossible. But the difference between a fixed and a growth mindset was the growth knew that there was possibilities. Do you hear what I'm saying? There was infinite possibilities as to how I could learn to do this. So I got to shape up and ship or ship out in the way that I talk to myself. So don't talk about you can't do something. Instead, it's, I have yet to. Instead of you saying that it's really hard, it's this is a challenge that I'm still trying to figure out. You see how you've left room for growth. It's like you buying a pair of shoes and you left room. You wear size 11, but you bought a 12, so you could grow into it. We got to make sure that our language allows us to do the same thing. Because here's what ends up happening with a fixed mindset. If you're not careful, but the way you talk, you will confuse your identity with your ability. I don't think you hear nothing I'm trying to say right now. Matter of fact, I should go ahead and go and stop this podcast right now. Matter of fact, we might as well just stop the whole podcast, the whole thing. No more path of away your result because you ain't trying to hear nothing I'm saying. We see this happen so often. Just because you didn't do something, that doesn't mean that you aren't capable of doing it. So if you think because you didn't do something, now you think you are a failure, let that be a telltale sign. I got a fixed mindset right now. And here's the deal. You ready? You ready? Just because you have a fixed mindset today doesn't mean you have to have a fixed mindset tomorrow. It will require some work, it will require some intentionality, but you, my friend, can do it. How Bobby Boucher say in The Water Boy, remember that movie? You can do it. Maybe that wasn't him, it was somebody else. Somebody else in the movie said it. I watched that movie 150 times while living in Louisiana, but you get my point.
Growth Mindset Language That Opens Doors
SPEAKER_00So now what's the difference between a growth mindset? What is a growth mindset? A growth mindset says this everything can be developed. My skills are built. My intelligence can grow. My confidence can be produced repeatedly. Failure is nothing more than feedback. Losses are nothing more than lessons. Effort is the investment that I make into the end result that I'm seeking. Do you see? So I was telling my 13-year-old son, I was telling him, you know, you didn't have the best weekend uh a couple weeks ago when we played down in Georgia for uh basketball tournament. And I told him, I said, you know what? You have an ace in the hole. He's like, What does that mean? I said, That means you have something in your back pocket that's like a secret weapon. And he goes, What is it? I said, in this household, development is a premium. You actually have someone in your life who knows how to help you to develop. So guess what? There is no ceiling. There is no limit. Do you all see how this works? If you play sports, if you're in business, this is the way I live my life, okay? I don't I don't go by society's metrics. I don't go by society's standards. You know what I tell myself? I tell myself in 366 days, I just want to look back on today and be like, wow, I'm better than I was back then. I'm more aware than I was back then. I'm more compassionate than I was. I have more peace than I did back then. You see, this leaves room for growth. So I did this in sports. I always said to myself, look, if I don't make it to where I want to make it, that's okay. I just want to be better this year than I was last year. And this is a growth mindset. So now here's here's the key. A growth mindset will separate you from who you are and what you're capable of from what you've only known. See, a lot of people they don't realize that they have growth mindsets, but it's it's it comes out in the form of your language. So the language of a growth mindset says, I haven't learned yet. Or they ask the question, what is this trying to teach me? Or they ask the deeper question, how can I improve on this? What is if I could go back, what would I do differently? Who do I need to become? So you start to see the fundamental difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Uh there's
Praise Effort Not Talent
SPEAKER_00a book. There's a book here that I was reading. It's called uh Mindset, the New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck. Okay, she was talking about uh there was a there's a case study that they did with uh four-year-old children, and the children were given an easy puzzle. And then after the after finishing the puzzle, one group was told, You are so smart. The other group heard, wow, you worked really hard. Then they were given a choice. They could do the same puzzle that they just did and just completed, or they could do a harder puzzle that they could learn from. And the reason why I tell you this, because this the results were crazy. And here's what ended up happening the children that were praised for their intelligence chose the easier challenge. See, they were told that they were smart. So now they believed that their ability was what they actually were. They believed their ability was their identity. So guess what they wanted? They wanted the thing to reaffirm their uh ability. They didn't want to choose something that was hard. They didn't want to choose something challenging. Why? Because it ran the risk of them not being smart. But the children that were praised for effort, they overwhelmingly chose the harder challenge. And here's why. One group was a growth mindset and the other one was a fixed mindset, meaning one group was protecting an identity and the other one was pursuing growth. Good God almighty. I don't think y'all hear nothing I'm saying right now. If you're gonna grow, please, please hear me when I say this. If you gonna grow, please know that that identity has got to go. So don't even spend your time trying to protect it. If you over here trying to protect your uh uh your identity, that means you ain't going to grow and you're operating from a fixed
Parenting Without Creating Dependence
SPEAKER_00mindset. And I'm gonna tell you right now, I just realized this uh last night. I just realized this last night. I told my wife, I told Carla, I said, Man, I've just been sad. I've been down, I can't figure what it is. I've been heavy. I'm like, what is it? Why? Why do I feel this way? And I started thinking about what it, what, what I went back to. And when it started when we went down to Pete Sham. And I realized at that moment, I said, I gotta get out. I gotta get out. Meaning, I gotta, I gotta let my own son, I gotta let him figure out this journey himself. I will be here to support him, but I gotta get out. Good God Almighty. See, sometimes as a parent, if we're not careful, we will be the ones who create a fixed mindset in our children and we won't prepare them for life. My mom used to always say, My job is not to uh give you fish, my job is to teach you how to fish. But sometimes when our parents are teaching us how to fish, I can be overwhelming because we've been so used to their energy giving us fish. So here I am on the other end of it. I'm the parent. I tell my son when to work out, I tell him when to go to the gym, I tell him what he needs to do. I tell, so when we got back, I said, you know what? I'm gonna build out a plan for you. And all I'm gonna do, I'm gonna text it to you. Here it is, you got it. And now you go down into the basement, you go for your run, you go do all the stuff to make sure that it's yours. And I didn't realize what I was doing, right? But I was slowly starting to pull out a little bit. But in the past, well, you know, I still tell him, like, look, all right, we're going to the gym, you got to work out. And then we went to the gym the other day, and you know how it is. He didn't want to be there. He didn't want to be there. I said, Oh, goodness gracious, we still doing this, huh? You still, you still doing this. But I forget sometimes he's 13 and he doesn't see the bigger picture. So I told him when we got home, I said, Listen, here's the deal. I'm not gonna make you go to the gym. I'm not gonna make you work out, I'm not gonna make you do all of these things. I'm not gonna do that anymore. This has to become yours. And I told him, I said, look, you got the weight plan, you got it, you got access to the weight room, you got, you gotta, look, you can handle that. If you would like to go to the gym, you will have to text me. Because right now I'm your only ride. And I said, You need to give me at least 24 hours morning. So don't text me at two o'clock talking about can we go to the gym at five? Nope, I got stuff I gotta do. If you want to go to the gym, you're gonna have to plan it out the day before. So about an hour later, I got a text message from him and said, Dad, can we go to the gym tomorrow morning? And here's why I'm telling you this. Because I realized the reason why I was so sad and why I was so down was because I'm grieving. I'm grieving the identity that I'm the one who's gonna teach them and take them there. But by teaching him and taking them there, all I'm doing is creating a fixed mindset in him. Because it's me telling him, it's me saying, do this, it's me showing him, it's me. It has to be his. What do we say that experience is the greatest teacher? You're the one who's gonna have to experience this. Instead of you depending on me using my energy as a primary source, I will become supplementary. I will be the one who comes in and just says it after you've made the choice. So my point of this is I realized in this particular facet, in this part of life, I had a fixed mindset. Isn't that weird? Wait, but yeah, but you were helping, yeah, but I had a fixed mindset in the sense that I didn't want to let go of that identity.
Failure As Feedback For High Performers
SPEAKER_00So what ends up the biggest, the biggest thing that I found from people that I work with, people that I coach, because I I broke life down like in my clients, like I looked at my clients. I have like people who are like professional athletes and I have people who are not professional athletes. And I what I used to do is say I have athletes and then I have regular people. No, no, no, no. They're all actually the same, really. I started to realize what it was. The people that I work with, in order for it to work, they have to primarily have a growth mindset. That's it. They have a growth mindset. So if you're in the academy, if you want to retreat, if you're for the most part, you have a growth mindset, meaning you have a different relationship to failure. You realize that failure doesn't necessarily mean that you're not enough or that you're not capable, that people are gonna judge you or that you shouldn't avoid risk. You realize that failure is actually more information. Failure is actually a better strategy. Failure is actually just uh it's gonna build my character. You start to realize that failure actually becomes educational. So for everybody here, I want you to start looking at your life. Start to do an audit and see am I living life based on uh uh uh from a fixed mindset or am I living it from a growth mindset, right? So, so you look at you look at a lot of professional athletes, right? A lot of professional athletes, um the ones that we worship, they had a growth mindset. We look at Tom Brady, we look at Michael Jordan, look at uh Kobe Bryant, right? I'm gonna show you the difference between the two, all right? So, like a fixed mindset says uh when something adverse happens or they they encounter adversity or times get hard, they go into self-preservation mode. They fold up, start to turn inward, and they get they they they clam up. But those who have a growth mindset realize that anytime that adversity, struggle shows its face, it's actually just an opportunity.
Kobe Jordan Brady And Relentless Effort
SPEAKER_00It is an invitation to a deeper part of themselves. So I look back at my man Kobe being Bryant. A lot of people don't remember this, right? Think about Kobe when he was in his rookie year, and they were playing the Utah Jazz in the conference, the Western Conference Finals, and he got three, he got three shots. Actually, there's four, I think. It was air ball after air ball after airball after airball. I remember watching that. I was watching this guy shoot it, and I've talked about this on this podcast before. Go on YouTube and just type it in, right? Type in Kobe Bryant airballs uh against um Utah Jazz. It was so uncomfortable to watch this kid shoot this ball and airball it, knowing he had Shaquille O'Neal down low. Now, at the time, Shaq was the most dominant player that this NBA had ever seen. And Kobe kept shooting the ball, air ball, air ball, air ball, and it was cringe worthy. You ever see somebody do something and you start cringing for them, you start to have second-hand this one? I was having secondhand embarrassment watching him do this. But he kept shooting it and kept shooting it and kept shooting it. And I was like, what in the world? No, I was too young though. I was thinking I was a freshman, I just finished my freshman year of high school. But now I realize what he was doing. This is a growth mindset. A growth mindset doesn't look at the fact that he shot the air ball. The growth mindset looks at the fact that I got another chance to shoot it. Let's go ahead and give it another try. A growth mindset doesn't look at the fact that I fell short. A growth mindset says, no, we're gonna try it again. So someone asked him in a press conference, they asked Kobe, you know, I guess he didn't shoot very well in the second in the first half. He was like 0 for 9 or something like that. And they were like, well, what were you thinking at halftime? Like, were you gonna stop shooting or what if you didn't make any more? He said, I'll go 0 for 30 before I ever go 0 for 9. What was he saying? He was saying, I'm not going to stop just because I'm experiencing adversity. I'm gonna go even further. I'm gonna miss 30 straight before I stop at nine. So the reason why I'm saying this to you right now, everybody has fallen short. Michael Jordan got cut from varsity. Tom Brady was the 199th pick. Kobe Ryan missed all of them shots when shooting air balls, but none of them viewed their effort as weakness. So the reason why I say that, and I told my son this, I tell my daughter this all the time, I live my life by this. Don't measure by the results that you experience. Measure yourself by did I get back up and try again? Was my effort in alignment with the result that I'm looking to experience? Because here's the reality of it. Sometimes you're gonna get up on the horse and you're gonna get bucked off. Life's got a job that it needs to do too. Sometimes you're gonna fall short. That is a part of it. But when you have a growth mindset, you know that no matter what comes my way, no matter what happens, it doesn't matter. I'm gonna keep
Turning Setbacks Into Better Strategy
SPEAKER_00going. So you go ahead and post that reel. Go ahead and make that post. Even though you may only get 400 views, the difference between someone who has a fixed and a growth mindset, the fixed mindset's gonna say, I'm not posting no more. I'm just not any good at social media. Nobody cares what I had to say. I'm telling you right now, when I first started this podcast, even in this part of life, I had a fixed mindset. I said, nobody wants to hear what I have to say. Nobody cares what I have to say. I'm not gonna do what what? No, you you post it and you do it because it lights you up. So the growth mindset says, you know what, I only got 400 views, but I'm gonna figure out what didn't work. I'm gonna go back to the chart, to the to the uh uh uh the drawing board. Maybe I need to change the hook. Maybe I need to change what I'm wearing, maybe I need to put the camera somewhere else. They will take the setback in the failure and use that as information and then repeat it. And here's the deal you ready? You ready? If you can do this over and over again, eventually that 400 view thing is gonna reach and get millions of views. Wow. Same situation, same outcome, different stories. That's the difference between having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. It's the story that you tell yourself. So now here's here's why I'm gonna leave you with okay. You need to understand that you always will have the ability to change. Someone asked me this the other day. I was on a podcast. They asked, is it possible for people, anybody to change? Well, absolutely, for sure. There's some attributes and some qualities that are needed, but we all have the ability to change, every single one of us. As long as you are willing and able, you are intentional, you must have a growth mindset in order to create change.
Nervous System Safety Ends Fear
SPEAKER_00And here's the beauty of it at any point, you can adopt a growth mindset, but I will tell you there is one thing that you Must do, and if you do not do this, it's going to be really challenging for you to adopt a growth mindset. You must let yourself know that you are safe. Oh, that's it. Yeah. You gotta let yourself know that you're safe. You gotta let yourself know that um you're good enough just as you are. Even if you try and you fall short. You're still enough. You have to let your nervous system know that we're safe to try this right now. We're safe to shoot this ball no matter what the result may be. And now here's what ends up happening. When you have a growth mindset, you've just eliminated fear of failure. And if we look at our lives, look at, I mean, we can talk about I can't speak for other countries, but for the most part, most American citizens are terrified of failure. Terrified to the point where they won't try something and expand their capacity and their abilities because they're too afraid of what if I fall short. But see, when you have a growth mindset, you don't even entertain this thing that we call fear. There is no failure. Yes, I may feel the old nervous system programs being afraid of what if we fall short, but I know that that's just an old version of me in the past life that's haunting me. That's a ghost that just needed to know that it was safe. So now I can go back to that version of me and let it know that it's safe and now we can carry on. Let's move forward. So the reason why I'm telling you all this, the reason why I've been doing this podcast. This is why you came here. This is why you're here. Look at every situation. Look at every day of your life. Look at your physical body. You're constantly growing. That's why none of your skin cells, skin cells, stay here. What do they do? What do they call it? What do uh what do they call that? Uh exfoliation. You gotta exfoliate yourself. Do we not realize that if it's happening on a cellular level with our skin, the same must be happening with our identities? Everything is constantly growing, everything is constantly changing. The same would have to be for you. This was why you came into this physical existence. So you could grow. So you could evolve. Instead of just saying, This is who I am. How about instead we say, This is where I am right now in life? But I realize right now I may be a caterpillar, but I came here to be a butterfly. And then you start to realize, yes, you've been talented. Yes, it got you to this point. But growth is what allows you to keep moving. So everybody that I work with, I got a couple people I work with in the NBA, and the goal is always to be an all-star. And I look at it like this, it's really simple. As long as you understand and you have a growth mindset, it's really simple to be. Your body's healthy. Everybody here can you can be an all-star, but you have to be at least open to the possibility that this could happen. So these people that we worship, that we put up on a pedestal, the Tom Braids, the Michael Jordan, the Kobe Bryant, please understand that every master was once a beginner, just like you. They all were the same as you. We've we got to witness Kobe. We saw him missing those three, four air balls. We saw Tom Brady going 199. We didn't see Michael Jordan getting cut, but somebody did. So the reason why I'm saying this is to understand that failure is only permanent when your learning stops. So that's why I say you can't fail. You can't fail. As long as you're willing to learn, you can't fail. Well, now I know I can't fail. Well, she, we might as well go ahead and try it. Let's see what it does. Let's see what it feels like. Let's see what it seems now. Life becomes an adventure. And you start to realize that your potential isn't actually fixed. It's your willingness to grow that determines how much of your potential you will actually access.
Comfort Protects Identity Challenge Grows You
SPEAKER_00So this is why we gotta be careful when we get comfortable. Because comfort protects identities. Challenge is what expands your identities. Challenge is what allows you to keep growing. So if you're seeking validation, you're seeking that pat on the back from somebody, you gotta be careful. Because this could be a telltale sign that you got a fixed mindset right now. See, someone with a growth mindset is seeking transformation. I'll take the pat on the back, but that ain't what I came here for. That ain't why I'm here. I came here to make it do what it do. And what it does, what it does, is what I came here to grow. I just want to grow. That's it. I just want to grow. Imagine a soul coming into this existence saying, I just came here to grow. I ain't come here to do nothing else. I know y'all came here to do a bunch of all the extra stuff. I came here to just grow. And I know with growth, it's gonna come with some time that it's gonna be uncomfortable. And there's gonna be times when you're gonna look yourself in the mirror and say, What the was I thinking when I signed up for this old raggedy game called human hood? What in the world was I thinking when I came into this existence? You know what you were thinking. You came here to grow. So I will tell you this, and you can take this or leave it. Everybody here has the seed of potential of growing. This is what I mean when I say like the seed of greatness is inside of you. This is what it means to be great. It resides inside of your ability to grow. You've been given everything that's needed in order to help you to grow. You have every facet, every tool, but you have to be willing and able to say, you know what, I'm in my season of growth right now. I'm in my season of growth right now. I know that. See, I induce growth, I induce it. I mean, you know when the babies come baby's supposed to come out and they induce labor and they give you, I don't know what those chemicals are they give you, but they make they make everything start to open up and now the baby's coming. Think of it like that with growth. You got to induce labor. And labor sometimes is long. Labor is sometimes painful. Now, I'm speaking from secondary experience. I didn't actually experience it. And I tell Carly all the time, you had an epidural, so you didn't really experience it like sometimes like they used to. I gotta tread lightly. I'm just telling you what I say. But my point of this is sometimes we got to induce the growth. Sometimes you got to put yourself in positions that will force you to grow. Stop taking the easy way. Stop thinking that it's the short, shortcut. Stop. We talked about this. Stop looking to heat everything up and cook everything in the microwave. Sometimes you got to get in slow in the crock prop. Sometimes you got to take your time with it. I tell my kids all this, all this all the time. Stop being in a hurry. Make sure that you're thorough. Be thorough. So now what ends up happening is you develop, you grow. I look at this like right now. I'm taking my time. I'm not over here trying to uh uh uh take the fastest, quickest way to wherever. I'm not doing all that. I'm not doing all that. You know why? Because now I'm bypassing my opportunity to grow. So that may mean, you know what? Go play those years on that team that's not very good. Because you know what's gonna do? It's gonna help you to learn how to be the man. It's gonna learn how you to deal with how to be a leader, how to emotionally regulate yourself. That's gonna give you more opportunity to grow than for you to go join a team that's already stacked. So where there's growth and where there's development, there ain't no limits. Y'all ain't trying to hear nothing I'm saying right now. I should go ahead and get off again. If I know I'm gonna grow, there's no limit to my potential. And now here's the deal. You know what they're gonna say? Four, five, six, seven years? Oh my goodness. He seems so like, how did he get so much better? He didn't get so much better. He just allowed himself to grow. He realized that comfort wasn't gonna do nothing but keep him stuck. So he challenged it. So for everybody here, here's my challenge to you. Go grow. Go grow. Put yourself in positions that are uncomfortable. Right? Figure out what that is. Invest in yourself. Do those things that make you feel uncomfortable to spur and induce growth. And don't become addicted to the validation outside of yourself because that's a trap to keep you in a fixed mindset.
